With our 2019/2020 season commencing today, we sat down with our 1st team captain, Robin Foot and got his thoughts on today's fixtures and the coming season.
Q. How are you and the team shaping up and preparing for this year?
A. I really have to give credit to the lads this year as they have been working extremely hard on their fitness and also on the style and structure of the game that we want to be playing. We’ve already played a few games this season and it is showing really well. There is great competition this year for positions so it’s helping to push the lads that little bit harder. Credit also has to be given to our coaches for getting us to this level too.
Q. Your first game of the season is at home, it will be important to get an opening win?
A. Yeah, it is always nice to have the first game at home. And to get off to a winning start as it settles the team and gets the points on the board.
Q. You played Mullingar twice last season, both before Christmas 2018. You claimed a 34-9 win at home and a 13-3 win away. Do you think it will be as easy to claim the points this year?
A. It’s never easy to claim the points in a game. You have to work hard to earn the win and a bit of luck always helps. You should never underestimate the opposition though.
Q. You will have 4 home games out of the opening 6, it will be important to obtain wins in these games and get off on the right foot in the first half of the season?
A. The home games are the ones you would aim for more in to try and achieve maximum points. And trying to position ourselves well in the table for the second round of games.
Q. You have new entries into the division this year with Edenderry, Balbriggan, Coolmine and North Kildare are becoming opponents. This shapes up as a tough group?
A. I feel this year is going to be very competitive with all the teams and a bad loss at any stage could end our chances of winning the league.
Q. Who do you think will be your toughest opposition this year?
A. Well just going by last year, we had some very tough, close games against Newbridge and Wexford Wanderers, but as always, every team will be a tough opponent and it will all be decided on the day which will come down to who wants it more.
Q. What do you think your chances are this year?
A. Well obviously your main objective is to win the league and with the players we have and the effort we are all putting in to training and games, we should be well capable of achieving it.
The our 2nds play Mullingar RFC at 1:30pm in Togehr today, followed by Robin and the 1st facing Mullingar at 3pm.
